Each story is different in perspective, setting, and plot; the author apparently ignored the advice to write only about what you know, with entertaining results. The subject matter (from the Manhattan Project to bicyclists to the life of a mayfly) is also unusual for modern American fiction: no anguished writers or angsty graduate students or alienated big-city dwellers.
